Is there really any difference between Artists color pencils and like Crayola or any other brand? I have some Derwent brand color pencils now that I haven't opened yet because if Crayola or Rose Art are just as good I'm going to take them back.

derwent is ok but if you are willing to spend the money, the best color pencils i have ever used for art are prisma color.

Crayola is better than Rose Art (I think Rose Art is about as crappy as you can get) but neither come anywhere close to the quality of a Derwent, Prismacolor, or Rembrandt.

The latter are pure pigment whereas cheapo brands meant for kids like Crayola have been severely mixed with wax and are hard to mix colors with, do gradients, or get a convicing texture.

The pencils are definitely different. I love Prisma color pencils the best. It is the only pencil where you get good results stacking the colors, light over dark and dark over light. They have a slight waxy texture. I've see some work that looked like a photograph done with them. I mix them with my pastels. If I have a detailed area I use the Prisma and the soft faded area I use the the pastel.
Derwent is a good brand though. But they make a water soluble and a non water soluble. See which ones you have. the water soluble ones can really be fun.

Prismacolor is my favorite. They have very rich pigment and are reasonably priced.
