When you aren't sure, try substitution. For example, plug in 3 for x and see what makes sense.
(2*3)(2*3) = 36, so you know the answer, now experiment to see which way it works: 4X or 4X^2
4X would equal 4*3, or 12, so that doesn't work.
But 4X^2 would equal 4*9, or 36.
And always substitute small numbers when using this method so you can easily do it in your head.
