Personally, I prefer their style before they released the Black Album. Definitely pick up Ride The Lightning and Kill 'Em All.

I'm partial to the 1-2 punch that is "Load"/"Reload", but a lot of that is due to the vastly improved sound over the earlier albums - "Metallica"(the Black album) is an excellent piece, as is "Master of Puppets" - "Ride The Lightning" was the first new Metallica album I bought; the songs are great but the production is a little, well, equalized for vinyl - "Kill 'Em All" sounds a little harsh, which was kind of the point at the time, but having made that point, it really needs a remastering (as do all the albums from the 80's) - my only problem with "Justice" is that it also needs remixing, as the bass is turned down too far; okay guys, Cliff is gone and Jason isn't Cliff, but should you let your album continue to suffer for it 20 years later? - I really really like the "Garage Days Re-revisited" EP as a stand-alone recording, not as just a segment of "Garage Inc."

While I feel like Master was the bands finest, I do enjoy Kill'em all and Ride the Lightning a great deal. The Black album was ok but a bit too commercial for my taste, anything after that is not Metallica I knew and loved.St Anger/Load/Reload sucked.I am sure people will not agree but I am old school.

Everything before the black album is excellent; buy all of them. Everything after the black album is horrible; don't waste your money. The black album itself is not bad, but definitely more commercial than their earlier stuff. It's worth owning, but buy their earliest stuff first.
I had the good fortune of seeing them in 1985 in a small club in TX, and it remains one of the best shows I have ever seen.

i liked "until it sleeps", first single off of the 90's album "load", and pretty much everything before it. most of the stuff after that, garbage. great band, one of my favorites. you've got to get "ride the lightning", their best album in my opinion.

Personally I don't listen to that music, I listen to more of an ambient electronica and alternative rock. Also piano rock, which is a little more unique.
