Tie. One was good at pitching, the other was the sultan of swat.

Neither. Ruth played in a league that excluded great pitchers like Satchel Paige. For most of his career Satchel Paige was not able to play against guys like Babe Ruth. I dont think that any one who played before the integration of baseball can be considered the greatest player of all time.

I really don't understand this obsession with Mays as the "best all-around player ever". Let's run down the checklist.

category // Ruth // Mays
hit - yes - yes
hit for power - yes - yes
run - yes - yes (Mays a bit better, one supposes)
field - yes - yes (advantage Mays, but young Ruth was pretty good)
throw - yes - yes (Babe wasn't in RF for nothing)
plate discipline - yes - yes (advantage Ruth, held career walks record for decades)
pitch - yes - no

Willie is missing one item, and it is one in which Ruth genuinely did excel. It doesn't get more "all-around" than that.

Yeah, such a distinction SOUNDS better applied to Mays, and his career is within living memory and he's still with us. But even Willie is looking up at a small handful of players who had greater, more diverse versatility than he did.

Oh, the Paige/Ruth thing goes to Ruth.

Ruth could pitch and hit so I'll go with Ruth. Although I think Willie Mays is the all around best player of all time.

Ruth did it all he was a great pitcher and was a great hitter. If he would have kept himself in shape he would still have the HR record. I still think Mantle was the best ever and he really put his body through hell. These players now have to sit out when they have a hangnail.

You have to go with the Babe, although Satch was sweet.

Neither Willie Mays was the best ever. He could run, hit, throw, and field. He is the most complete player to ever play the game.
