have the benefit of surprise and would shoot the owner if he reached for a gun. None of the answers that I got on the internet gave me reason to think otherwise.
However, I was talking to a friend today, and he suggested there is a battle going on between rich and poor in the United States. He says that when a poor criminal enters the house of a richer person, the criminal is usually on drugs and is going to shoot the house owner even the house owner does not own a gun.
Now that makes more sense than any replies that I received on the internet. If you are going to be shot anyway, you might as well have a gun and maybe you will be lucky enough to get the drop on the intruder sometimes
I am disappointed that I didn't get a single sensible answer on Yahoo answers, and had to turn to someone else.
But I still need further convincing. Is this the way it is?Are most intruding criminals apt to be poor people hopped up on drugs
and determined to shoot you even if you do not have a gun?

Yes most criminal intruders are on drugs. Its also true that many more crimes are prevented by people with guns than there are gun crimes. You have been wrong in apposing guns. We have the right to own guns for a reason. The reason is not so we can hunt or just collect guns. The reason is that everybody over the age of 18 is part of the militia. Its not the National Guard, they are part of the military. The militia is us. We also have the right and responsibility to protect our own lives and property instead of waiting for some cop to show up after its all over. We also have the right if necessary to overthrow the government if they become too tyrannical. Read the constitution and understand why it says what it does. Its not the antiquated document you may have been led to believe. The nature of government has and will never change. It doesn't exist to tell us what our rights are. It exist to limit the size and scope of the government so that we can be free of the government trying to run our lives. You need guns. Why does the crime rate drop everywhere gun ownership is encouraged? Think about it.

Most of those who are behind bars right now have a connection with the use of drugs. Methamphetamine is the current drug of concern to law enforcement. I own a handgun. I'm well trained in its use. I've never yet had to shoot someone, but I pity the poor shlub who might force me into that position. You see I have one advantage over any intruder. In the military it's called "terrain appreciation". I know the floor plan of my home. I know where to hide and get the drop on someone. That would include the drug-crazed idiot who decided to crash through my front door in hopes of robbing me or worse. Also, I'm sober. My odds of shooting straight and hitting my target is much better than the "doper" standing there with some "Saturday Night Special" and a load of mind-altering chemicals coursing through his veins and brain.
That's my answer. It's up to you to determine if it's sensible or not.

Jeff A is right. The media will only report on the negative stories concerning gun ownership. However, there is a monthly magazine that reports all the positive results of gun owners using force, or the threat of force, when protecting themselves, property, or family. Every month there is about 6 to 10 recent accounts reported. These are stories that the media won't touch. This doesn't really answer your question directly, but it does give credibility to responsible gun owners who want to protect what they work for. If you wish, you can contact me for the name of the magazine.

Be careful. The media love to run stories about people being killed with guns they kept in their houses, but they rarely run stories about people who saved their families against intruders by using a gun. This happens quite often but the media are biased against gun ownership so they won't print the stories.
We would have different opinions if we knew all the facts.

Ive used my weapon 3 times in the time I have had them....once when some 3 people smashed some windows to break in to my home...I fired a warning shot and they ran away.. asecond time I was stopped at a red light and some guy ran up to the passenger door and tried to get in....I pulled my weapon and pointed it at him..he ran away.
Another time was 4 guys who were either looking to cause a problem or trying to rob me while again I was sitting at a red light and they came up the car and one tried to use a screwdriver to stab me... I shot him...too bad he lived. So yes and no to your answer..there are times criminals can suprise you but knowing what is going on around you can also give you and edge.
