My fiance and I were to be married at the end of the year but now he has enlisted in the Army and we are thinking of getting married before Basic Training since we heard he will make an additional $1500 per month. This money will help out with the household bills while he is away. Does anyone know if this is true?

Yes being married pays more than being single but I'm not sure of how much the Army pays. Its an allowance ... the sponser needs to feed and house his dependant.

Nope...LMAO an extra $1500 a month? How funny! It's more like an extra $200.00 a month sweets and that depends upon the cost of living where you are and the availbility of post/base housing because that's what it is for...off post/base housing. Man it would have been nice if we got an extra $1500 a month when ex was in the military! I wouldn't have had to work 12 hours a day during the week! And watch out for those commisarys...They're not kept as uptodate as civilian grocery stores, produces has been known to be rotten by the time you get it home. You have to watch the dates on perishibles VERY closely. And watch out for cereal boxes with teeth marks in them (rats/mice). As a military spouse I opted to shop at the civilian grocery stores, yeah I paid a little more but at least I got fresh produce, and I wasn't dumping rat droppings into my cereal bowl in the morning.

The money you are talking about is not extra in
his base pay, he gets extra pay for having a de-
pendent who in this case is you. He will get
B.A.Q. with dependent, depending upon his rank,
Seperate Rations, if his dependent lives off post,
and you are entitled to get a military dependent
card which will enable you to get free medical
and use any commissary or stores on any military
base, which is a big help, as the commissary
known as a supermarket in civilian terms, prices
are much better. However your husband has to
declare you as his wife once in the military and
once he does then everything else will fall in place.
He may even be eligable for family seperation
pay if he is deployed to a combat zone, so yes
he will get more pay but it is to offset costs to
help him support his family. Be sure and apply for
your military I.D. card as that is very very useful.
As a retired military (army) I served 22yrs so I
know these things.

Yes, when you get married, you have the option to live on base and not recieve BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing), or move off base and recieve it. Its up to you, but moving off base/living off base, you'll recieve whatever the allowance is... its usually based on the cost of living where ever you are. We are AF, so I dont know exactly how the Army does it, but it should be similar. :)

The housing allowance is higher when you're married, but you'll have to have your fiancé find out the exact amount.
