Wont Beckham- REALLY bring football to the fore in the USA?

Taking note of the dearth of answers, i'm guessing soccer/football has never caught on as a spectator sport with mass appeal, in the US and likely never will.
Also it's just as unlikely a single celeb will bring about the popularity its fans (and owners who invested millions) had hoped for.

I believe that was the purpose of his being hired, but it hasnt done any good yet.
