OTTAWA (Reuters) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai pleaded with Canada on Tuesday not to withdraw its 2,500 troops when their mission ends in early 2009, saying to do so would only help deliver his country back to the Taliban, the Globe and Mail newspaper reported.
Karzai made his comments to a special meeting of all Canadian reporters based in Afghanistan.
"The presence of Canada is needed until Afghanistan is able to defend itself, and that day is not going to be in 2009," a story on the Globe Web site quoted him as saying.
So far 70 Canadian soldiers have died in Afghanistan, most of them in roadside bomb explosions near their base in the southern city of Kandahar.

Why are our soldiers there ? Their original mission was peace keeping - Under this Bush friendly Conservative minority they are hunting and killing
Will Harper'sgovernment fall to no confidence because of this
Why is Harper using our military for this purpose?

The US has our back
Like they did in 1812 when they tried to invade ?
Like they did in 1914 when they made money off ww 1 and we went to war
Like they did when we went to was in 1939 and the US and men like Prescott Bush invested in Hitler ?
Just go back to thinking we are all a bunch of beer drinking Eskimo's - and then I will feel safe

Harper is using Canada's military for that purpose because Bush won't use America's for it. There's no oil money in it.

Man has been killing man for thousands of years. The concept is called 'pre-emptive strike'. Kill them before they kill you, or die.
It is in Canada's national interests to be in this war for many reaons, among them oil, prestige, money, to maintain goodwill with its powerful neighbour, USA, and many other classified reasons, etc. etc.....
As long as you are not there, fighting and in harm's way taking fire from a Taliban Russian AK47 7.62mm round or Russian RPG round, why don't you have some Moet and Chandon Rose Imperial Champagne NV, and relax, buddy. Respectfully and inoffensively, get some books from the library and read about the Crusades, the Napoleonic Wars, the Boer War, the Spanish Civil War, the American Civil War, the Vietnam war, the Indonesian Confrontation, the Malaya Emergency, the Congo War, Vietnam, Korea......How come Osama and President Bush don't square off in Tombstone, each with a trusty Colt Peacemaker.45 caliber and shoot it out mano a mano???? Then we can all go on in peace and live our lives happily. The young men always fight the wars for the old men in power sitting in thier comfortable ofices surrounded by their Security Detail enjoying caviar and Stolichnaya Vodka, while the young get shot, blown up and die. Pour quoi????There is a long, long list of conflict in history...... C'est la vie et c'est la guerre.....{:-)

That is an excellent question, but going in as a peace keeping force as you said in the beginning was just that .
But it is hard to not defend your self against roadside bombing and ambush, without retaliating.
As you already know all wars make money...the unfortunate fallout is innocent lives.
The people of their respective countries will always fight longer and harder than the foreign troops, they fight be it right or wrong for their country... Canadian troops fight for a government that in the long run will pull out as soon as public opinion demands it.

Canadian officials know Clinton stuck them with Swissair111 instead of taking responsibility for a hijack plane in 1998 out of JFK. They are not dumb and tired of our politics. If the Taliban is up there they may be like others looking for squatters rights to oil & passage as the Greenland ice melts. Russia among others all in there.

Did German's attack Canada in WW2? Should we have stayed home and pretended Hitler was just a poor misunderstood guy and should be left alone? Grow up,Canada is there supporting it's allies just like we should.War isn't pretty but fascism is even uglier. It's the fascists to the south we need to be more concerned about in the long run though.

I believe we should withdraw all troops from Afganistan nuke the place to dust and send them back in NBC suits to count the dead. That should discourage the Tallies a bit.
