"The horticulturalist used a SYSTEMIC insectiside to make her prize winning orchids fatally toxic to the aphids that were eating the plants."
That's the only context I've heard systemic used in. As in an insecticide that kills bugs by getting the toxic chemical into the plant's vascular system. Note: don't use systemic insectisides on plants you want to eat....you'll die too!
