I mean seriously, guys. Not everything is a 100% hard line stance. We all agree that we love our contry (even if we don't think the other side doesn't) so why can't we sit down and have a civil conversation instead of slinging insults around?

Thank you!! I posted this as a question before and I'll reiterate the same thing again Do people realize we are all Americans and who is elected into office will effect us all the same way! I understand people have different ideas on the ways things should be run, but instead of calling each other stupid names, why not actually try to present facts on why what you think is right and pose valid arguments regarding the issues… What is important right now is the state of country and who we need to put into office to fix it… calling each other out for dumb irrelevant things won’t resolve anything…

I wish that could happen. I really enjoy the occassional e-mail exchanges I have, including debates with people who have different views.

But there is a larger issue here that is driving the hard-line stances. Beginning about 25 years ago, the extreme right (NOT conservatives in general) adopted a politics of division, dirty tricks, wedge issues, and general intolerance for dissent.

That pattern of behavior continues--and the extent to which this has been carried by the neoconservatives in power makes it clear that it is more than the ordinary rhetoric of politics. We have see outright assults on free speech andothe rconstitutional rights by the right-wing, the squandering of hundreds o fbillions of dollars--and attempts to label anyone who dissents from administration policy as "unpatriotic" or worse.

When you have this kind of action from oone group--the opponents do not crawl into the backround--they become more hard-line themselves. And that is justified. One can conced minor points when dealing with an oponent who is acting in good faith. When dealing with bullies and would be dictators--only a fool will give any ground.

The right wing started this fight. The American people--conservative, moderate, and liberal--will finish it. Until then--no. There can be no peace with those who would destroy America--and that is what the right-wing intends.

I agree with the first answer. Took the words right out my mouth. There are too many extremist flooding this site. It's all fun and games though. If you would like to engage in an intelligent conversation without bashing, I recommend you take a debate or a political science class. Usually those classes are well balanced.

Of course, just not here. For one thing a blog of any type will draw the extremes. Then their is the fact that most people who feel politically active ARE hardliners and most who do not would not be interested in a political blog. And finally, it is difficult to hold a conversation when you can only post a question or respond. It is much easier to talk in real life.

You're right, but you're also wrong. Of course not everything is a 100% hardline stance. You are correct. Unfortunately, about 97% of Americans, conservatives and liberals alike, BELIEVE that everything IS a 100% hardline stance. Independent thinking apparently went out with the speakeasy...

Becuase when you label people it's so much easier to dismiss everything they say. Why bother to prove your point when you could just call the other guy a hippie liberal? Or a hard line conservative?

I have intelligent conversations on this site all the time. The terms do not affect me, as I understand their meaning.

Incidentally, I get b/a from Liberals as often as Conservatives, but particularly from the more mature users who are actually here to discuss politics.

You get what you come here for. But if it's feeling good, politics has NEVER been about that in the US.

Of course.

the problem is there are too many "Haters" to many people interested in attacking rather than debating.

There are too many people who spew rhetoric and propaganda rather than present facts and arguments.

I have tried to have meaningful debates but then some one starts up with unprovable statements or personal attacks (solely based on my opinions) and they degrade from there.

I almost wish there was a blocker that would block of the extremists of both sides so the rational people who are more to the center can talk and actually debate like reasonable people.

What a refreshing question!! There was a day when Liberals and Conservatives did talk over issues together. I'm not sure just when that changed, but the country has suffered as a result. Too many people are willing to sacrifice the good of the country for their personal agenda and I worry about the impact it will have on us.

yes it is but you really have to skim the questions here to find one which doesn't call out all liberals or all conservatives.

I still don't understand the cheap shots at the "other side" on here. Isn't the war over in Iraq and Afghanistan?
