My father's brother recently passed away at a young age. I have heard that if a relative passes away you are not supposed to do somethings for 1 year. What are we not supposed to do? For example, I remember some of my friends not being able to celebrate Diwali.
Is it for 1 year?

It depends on exact relation and area wise culture. These rules are developed by locational culture and not much guided by religion.
In our area followings are the tradition (assuming its direct brother of father, who has expired) -
1. Would not take non vegetarian foods for 15 days from the date of death.
2. 13th day is supposed to be perform the last rituals. You should cut your nails on that day by the Barber. Shave beard and mustaches. In some culture you need to shave head to complete bald.
3. After shaving etc. you need to take bath in Ganges or any river or at least in a lake or pond.
4. On 15th day you should eat fish.
5. For one year you can not take direct part in any Puja or any other religious rituals.

Normally whenever any close relative passes away, no celebrations are held in the family for an year. Similarly the close relatives of the deceased refrain from particip;ating any celebration or function. However, there is no hard and fast rule for the same and depend upon the relationship and love you have with the deceased. in normal course such cyustom is being observed when father, mother, brothersister, son or daughter dies

Usually in Hindu family (-any caste, greed, community-) they will not celebrate festivals for one full year. It is because of that the affected family will not be ready to accept the dearest death happened in that family. When they are very sad it will not be nice to celebrate also. One more thing any girl's marriage can be conducted after three months of time if both the family permits. Kannigha Dhan is most essential for that family after the death of a person and it is allowed as per sasthra. All the best Yours VRVRAO

The customs vary from one region to another. You would do well to ask your parents/elders about what is the tradition in your family. Generally, as a sign of mourning, festivals, weddings and other such happy occassions are not observed with the usual fanfare for a certain amount of time.
Usually, the "not do" list is applicable only till the shraadh ceremony. It extends upto a year only when somebody loses his/her parents.
Basically, there is no fixed rule. You follow traditions and your own heart.
