I have to write a paper for a sociology class about society's obsession with appearance and the influence that society has on teens and how they look at themselves. any ideas?

Yes, just look at any show aimed towards teens..."The Hills", is a good example. Intelligence and integrity aren't rewarded, good looks and money are, as well as backstabbing and cheating. I hope I never have daughters, the media don't seem to provide many strong role models for girls...just Brittney, Paris, and Lindsay.

To many people are being trained by advertisements to become obsessed at what one looks like on the outside. It is the inside of us that beauty is really at. If one cares or loves someone for how they look on the outside, they don't really have much. For looks can always be lost, even in sec.s, if one got burnt or cut in a car accident.
But what we are on the inside counts the most. If one is a nice, loving person, they will probably stay that way and improve even more. A nasty one is hard to get to become nice. They have to be willing to do what it takes.

Yes think of media images- magazines- the ideal body images thrown at woman and how few are actually 6'0 and 125 lbs, etc like the models. Things like that may help.

eating disorders.
thats what i feel is all too common.
i myself had an eating disorder for the longest time.
i always thought people thought as me as fat just because i wasnt as skinny as someone like nicole ricchie.
its sad.
