What is the definition of a free spirit? I used to think a free spirit would be a cowboy, free on the open range without a care in the world except to herd and meditate under the stars. Or a mountain climber, who freely scales mountains, without a care in the world to stop him, no thought of the worried wife or kids at home. Now, I imagine you could be somewhat of a free spirit if you can learn to be free of the things that hold you back. Those things could be hate, ego, pride, foolishness, greed or anything mentally keeping you from finding happiness. Human beings have the ability to change, to consciously overcome whatever is hampering them. Animals, on the other hand, will go with what they are meant to do in their environment.

I am more of a free spirit than I used to be. I don't worry as much about what people think and I have forgiven myself of some of the foolish things I've done. I know money cannot buy happiness. I have my priorities straight, I feel. I feel all the good things you do make a difference in this world and educating yourself should never cease. Things that hold me back are pride, shyness, and bring too hard on myself.

Well, I'm a libertarian and an atheist, and no one chooses to be either of those because they're popular. That's just where my conscience and my rational thought lead me to. In the face of societal ignorance (of libertarianism) and hatred (of atheism), such people have to be at least a bit of a free spirit. Also, part of libertarianism is not being afraid to be a rugged individualist, so libertarians are almost by definition free spirits.
