The point is for a team to get as many runs as they can.
The bowler has to release the ball from his hand behind a line and his arm must be in a vertical like position. The bowler aims to get the batsman out by hitting the wickets (3 stumps) with the ball. The bowler along with the fielders are all on one team trying to get the batsman out. The fielders, and also the bowler are able to get the batsman out by catching the ball after the batsman has hit it before it comes back to the ground.
The batsman stands at the opposite end to the bowler to protect the ball from hitting the wickets, and to hit the ball to gain runs. There are only two batsmen on the pitch at any time during the game. The one not mentioned so far is at the same end of the 'rectanglar shaped' ground as the bowler.
The batsman can get runs by hitting the ball over the boundary (the edge of the pitch) without the ball bouncing from the moment it hits the bat (6 runs gained), by hitting the ball and it going over the boundary after bouncing (no matter how many times/rolling) (4 runs), or by hitting the ball to a place in the field where the fielders will take time to get the ball, giving the batsmen time to run from one end of the 'rectangle' to the other (dunno what u call it!) (1 run for 1 run) (by the way, there are two batsmen playing at once, but only one of them receives the balls from the bowler. The other is active when they get a run (as the batsmen effectively switch positions - yeah, both batsmen have to run to get the 1 run)

Chess whats the point? Rugby whats the point? Baseball whats the point? Whats the point of any sport?
Its about targets, goals, competition, bravery, teamwork, daring, skill and learning about yourself and the world by pitting yourself against the world. Its about respecting the Laws and the Umpire and taking the crunchy with the smooth. Its about a 90 mph hard cork ball directed into your ribs and if you flinch it will hit you. If you stand up and play straight you'll be ok. Its about learning to make a ball spin and seam off the pitch or swing through the air to deceive the batsman.
Besides that its the only game where you stop for a meal at half time.

Great answer Siddhartha Basu!
I love cricket. One day matches can be very exciting, and if you find the 3/4/5 day version too long, then you can just dip in and out of it - you don't have to follow every minute of the play.
And I'm proud to say - for a gal - I understand the rules (though some of the LBWs get me sometimes lol!)

"The point" is a fielding position exactly square of the wicket in the off-side of the batsment, about halfway between the batting crease and the boundary. Other variants of the position involve and are not restricted to forward point, backward point, cover point (all on the half way mark slightly right or left of the actual point field position), and deep point, deep cover point, deep backward point on the boundaries, positions which have been made redundant by the introduction of the "sweeper".

To be honest you could say that about any sport - whats the point of football? A sport is a sport its not a matter of life and death now is it??? Its just about two teams competing against each other to see who wins - simple as that. I say the same thing about snooker cant stand watching it so i dont - but each to their own

Don't knock what you don't know or understand. One of the greatest games there is. I also though for many years that the game is boring and long-winded, but that was before I started playing socially and later competitively. To play cricket successfully demands a lot of the players mental and physical capabilities. You will surprised at how fit some of the players are. There are so many options in cricket that it offers much more than that of baseball, basketball, football, soccer and rugby can offer.

The point of cricket is similar to baseball, you hit the ball with the paddel and run to the base type thing.
