"Moonlight Sonata" by Beethoven. It's depressing but lovely, and it's a classic.

Without a doubt some of the saddest piano works were written by Chopin, including some of the preludes and etudes, and the sonata #2 Funeral March. Rachmaninov wrote some incredibly moving and sad pieces, but I don't know if you could classify them as depressing - there's always a little ray of hope in them.

I agree with the Rachmaninov Etude Tableux suggestion

I also think that Rachmaninov's Moment Musical in B minor (opus 16 no. 3), Elegie (Opus 3 no. 1), and 18th Variation from Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini would suit your needs.

hope you like them (even if they are depressing)!

In addition to those already mentioned (Chopin Preludes, LudwigVan Moonlight in particular), you might find something suitable in Debussy's Preludes (eg footprints in the snow). Perhaps not.

As a pediatrician, I find Schubert's Erlking hauntingly beautiful but extremely depressing. (There is also a vocal rendition - even worse although Fischer-Dieskau sings it so well.)
