If so, what/who influenced you in particular?

I tend to think that the persuit of philosophy would liberate me from the boxed in kind of thinking that religion produces. Thats just me though.

I agree with the first poster, the study of philosophy probably tends to make most people less religious, not more. The tenets of religion have to be taken on authority, while philosophy encourages and even requires you to think things out and arrive at your own conclusions, preferably through some method of rational thought. In that light, religion can be seen as just another form of dogma, and can be easily contained within its own mental box.

Also, perhaps coincidentally but perhaps not, many of history's greatest philosophers have been atheists, including Nietzsche and a number of the ancient Greek philosophers.
