This just in: New Rock Sucks!!!

I can't think of a single band that would rank in the top 10 of all time.

My top 10 (not mine personally but, the most popular):
Led Zeppelin
The Beatles
Rolling Stones
The Who
Pink Floyd
Eagles
AC/DC
Queen
Aerosmith
U2

This is a false dichotomy. Firstly, there is no such thing as "classic rock." It's the name of a radio format, not a style of music. Musical genres are characterized by defining traits that the bands all share, such as all blues-rock bands being based off of the blues. There is no unifying characteristic shared by all bands commonly called "classic rock" bands. Secondly, there are bands from the same time period as many "classic rock" band who don't have the benefit of semi-constant radio play and marketing. I've never heard anyone call Captain Beefheart or the Silver Apples "classic rock," but ask any of their fans and they're undoubtedly both "classic" and "rock." The term is at best simply shorthand for "old bands," although of course it completely ignore the giant mass of terrible, terrible older bands that society doesn't remember..

Now here's the important part: Most people have a very narrow view of modern music, and in fact most music made in the past twenty years. People think of the '80s and think hair metal. How many people remember no wave (not new wave)? Any '90s stoner metal fans out there? How can you honestly compare ubiquitous cultural sensations like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin with music you haven't even heard? How does that work?

The irony of people who blame MTV for dumbing down music is that most of them simply ascribe to the beliefs of Rolling Stone or VH1. Turn off your TV, turn off your radio, and try looking. You'll find things from literally every decade and every year that you can enjoy. Abandon your assumptions.

Classic rock. People had more skill back then. They could do so much, invented new ways of playing music, etc. Bands likes the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, the Ramones, The Who, the Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, etc. were all immortal.

Modern rock isn't as appealing. Most bands are corporate rock bands, meaning they exist only for the money. Thus, they try to make their songs are simple as possible and catchy. This works sometimes, but not in their cases. There are a few bands that have shown impressive skills though.
