The play is about a gentle drunkard named Elwood P. Dowd who is extremely wealthy, but down-to-earth. He has a friend named Harvey, who is a Puka, or Pooka (an Irish sprite), and who no-one else can see. Harvey takes the form of a six-foot rabbit to Elwood (or as he invariably introduces himself, "My name is Dowd. Elwood P. Dowd. Here is my card. This is my associate and good friend, Harvey").

Elwood's relatives try to have him committed to a Psychatric
Ward, so they can get their claws on his $$. At the end, Harvey wins the day.

As Doc mentioned , it is a classic American comedy.

There is a play and a movie. The movie stars Jimmy Stewart. It's about a guy who has an invisible friend, who is a 6ft rabbit. Though this plot may sound completely silly, it is basically about mental illness...

On a completely unnecessary note, I am creeped out by costume characters! When I saw this movie, (the rabbit is invisible in the movie, but I think he is visible in the play) the psychological thoughts of watching this guy talk to and communicate with an invisible six foot rabbit, traumatized me!

**EDIT** It's about mental illness... the main character 'sees' a rabbit where there is none. How else would you catagorize that? His sister in the end decides to accept this. It is a dark comedy dealing whether or not we are more fun a little 'off' mentally, or are we more vital just being 'normal'... ugh Maybe you should actually read the play Theatre Doc ...But maybe then you still won't get it. Most superficial people don't tend to understand unlying meanings of anything creative...AND the word is "Pooka".

Harvey is a classic American Theatre comedy. It is not about mental illness. It is about a puka, a mythological Irish creature which in this case is a rabbit. Just do a web search of "Harvey"
