They don't really know how persay. That is a misconception. You and your baby will have to learn together. If you are going to breastfeed it may be hard at first but eventually if you both stick with it you will both get the hang of it. Latching on as it is called is not as easier as it is believed to be.

It's an innate reflex. You can often see a fetus sucking on its thumb in utero. Babies often nurse before their mothers get off the delivery table. It's just a natural thing to do. (It also helps the mother's uterus to contract, too.)

Pictures of babies in the womb often show them sucking their thumbs - so I guess the instinct for sticking something in their mouth is inate

ALL mammals are born with the instinct to find their mother's breast and suckle

A baby must be able to tolerate touch to the mouth area and demonstrate the reflexes needed for oral feeding, such as rooting, sucking, cough, and gag reflexes.

Its just a think that mammals know how to do, they automatically know how to suck!! Alot of men never actually grow out of it!!!!
