My work schedule comes out a month ahead of time, so I have to plan now. Should I take the weekend before or after off of work? It's on Wednesday this year.

Definitely before. If it was past the hump, say Thursday or Friday, then it could be both weekends. But since it's Wednesday, I recommend the weekend before. By November 3rd, people have moved onto thinking about Thanksgiving-Christmas planning, black friday, etc. Pumpkins are considered pie instead of jack-o-lanterns. In fact, I get remarks when I don't take down my decorations a few days after the actual holiday is over. That being said, several larger scale haunted houses, costume party / ball events, etc. will probably still run the weekend after. For me though, it's lost its glory by then.

Whatever you choose, enjoy!

i gave up celebrating Halloween a long time ago, unless you count answering the door and passing out treats.
