Vertical = up and down
Horizontal = left and right.
Look at a table. The legs are vertical, the tabletop is horizontal.
(Unless you have a crappy table, I guess).

I agree with all the previous answerers. You can remember this very easily.
The V in the word "vertical" is an arrowhead pointing down ... so vertical is up and down.
Horizontal must be the other one.

vertical is up/down, and horizontal is left/right...
Think of it this way... the horizon goes left/right... so HORIZON-tal is left/right too.
(that's how I taught myself to remember it many years ago!)
