If ya stick near the main parts of town / the major cities - odds are, you'll never see a gator outside of the zoo (unless you go to the college campus).
The gators are pretty wary of folk & stay away from 'em for the most part.

My attitude differs a bit from some of the other answers. You are more likely to see an alligator if you are in a swampy area, or in a small lake in a "country setting". BUT......alligators in those settings are less likely to be a problem. Retention ponds and swimming pools are places where alligators wander and get into by accident. And the problem with those situations is that those alligators have lost their fear of humans. Those are the ones that will attack.
The best advice is to enjoy the view. If you happen to see an alligator, don't approach it, just enjoy the view and move on. The vast majority of alligators, like the vast majority of humans, are harmless. But, like humans, alligators have their aggressors. So, enjoy but just keep your guard up. And, enjoy Florida. I'm a lifetime Floridian and wouldn't live anywhere else.

Well if you are in Gainsville, just consider everyone to be a Gator and you won't be surprised. But elsewhere just watch out for the guys in orange and blue t-shirts or body paint. They are most probably gators. They harmless enough, especially if you offer them a beer.

Just likes sharks..............don't go into areas where alligators live. If you go water skiing understand that most large bodies of water have some type of gator population but most gators want to meet you less than you want to meet them. Try not to land on them while skiing.
Also, one of their favorite foods is dog........Do not walk your dogs around unknown lakes.

not very likely unless you go looking for it. Alligators are pretty docile creatures.
