If they were written within the past twenty years, then unless the author or authors have released them for vree the answer is no. At least not legally. Books that are in the public domain and are online can be read for free. Figure anything released before 1923 is in the public domain in the US. Then figure at least 70 years from the date of publication for it to enter the public domain if the book was first published after January 1, 1978. For example, a book published in 1987 should enter the public domain in 2057 at the earliest.

No. Reading books that are under copyright law for free is illegal. You may check them out from the library for free, but other wise you are going to have to buy it or borrow it from a friend.
