Because of tradition, skill and there is excitement if you look beyond the surface.
All you do is hit a ball with a stick, huh? Have you tried that against live pitching? Then have that pitch coming at you at close to 100 mph? It's not easy. Go to a batting cage and try even the 80 mph speed.
If it doesn't take a lot of talent, why aren't you out there trying as you can be a multimillionaire playing MLB baseball? Sure beats working for a living.

First of all, how can you be so ignorant to post a question like that? I want to see you hit a small white baseball coming at you at 95 MPH over 300 feet. And there are these things called change ups, curve balls, sliders, and other breaking pitches. And baseball is a lot more than hitting. If you are a pitcher you have to be able to pitch a game which usually includes about 100 pitches over the course of about 2 hours or more. And if you are an infielder you have to be able to track where the ball is going to bounce and what speed it is going at and you have to put those 2 together and predict where the ball will go so you can put it into your glove. And if a ball is 50-100 feet up in the air it is not easy to track it. And how about catchers. They have to squat down and catch a ball about 150 times per game. Baseball is a lot harder than people think, this is the most ignorant question I have ever seen on here.

Ted Williams was arguably the best hitter ever and he did it 4 times out of 10, so it's harder than it looks.
There's a lot of strategy and a certain amount of Zen in baseball, so not everyone likes it. If a game that contains a lot of slow patches (which are actually full of things going on if you know what to look for) is going to bore you, then it's not your game. I have a love for stories -- telling them and listening to them -- and that's what led to my own interest in baseball. It's a sport full of great -- often funny -- stories, and a game itself has a sort of narrative feel, if you sense things on that level. Going to a game with someone who knows and loves the game and is good at communicating the whys of both is the best way to find out why people like it, if you do in fact care to have an answer to your question.

You're absoutly right - hitting a ball with a stick takes a great amount of talent. Bar none, it's the hardest thing to do in any professional sport in the world.

Wow how much dumber can people get? If you say that for baseball might as well say it for basketball or football (that they just fight over a ball). But it takes a LOT more talent then you think for anything. Try it, it isn't that easy. It isn't easy at all.

why didnt your mom swallow u!!!!
hitting a 95 mph fast ball is alot harder than kicking a ball (soccer) throwing to a 6'5" reciever (football) bouncing a round ball( basketball), hitting stationary ball on a tee (golf, which is still a pain in the ***)
dont get me wrong football is the greatest sport alive, but baseball is the hardest to be good at!

what's the factor of ANY interest? that is making (or observing) each each now and then marvelous performs, the place gamers pit themselves no longer in user-friendly terms against the different individuals, yet their very own own achievements, and each each now and then historic data. a stable baseball interest is stuffed with marvelous approach, and no rely if that is a sluggish-paced interest, it gives you time to relax, get excitement from the employer of the acquaintances you're with, and while you're at a stadium, get excitement from the factors of interest and sounds - a plane passing overhead, a cool night breeze, even the heady scent of the concession stands - all with out lacking the action considering you grew to become away for a 2d. So observing that is a social interest. usual, that is a much extra relaxing interest to show screen than many, because of the fact of its p.c..; i detect it a super thank you to unwind after a demanding day at paintings, because of the fact it enables me downshift straight away. on the different hand, an exciting play could have me on the sting of my seat and desiring a replay! i like the undeniable fact that baseball does no longer require its gamers to be tall or heavy (witness Ichiro and Jamie Moyer of the Mariners), so extra "common" gamers have a huge gamble to prevail on the interest. i like "pitcher's duels"! i like distinctive roles gamers play, like the ulitity men, a number of whom are my favorites for their versatility. and that i like the historic previous, that's so deeply rooted in u.s. itself. I especially advise you watch the action picture "Bull Durham" in case you haven't any longer seen it, the place the significant character, Annie, talks approximately baseball as a faith that sustains the soul. that is easily mine! i'm able to assure you, the extra you learn and watch baseball, the extra you will finally end up information it and appreciating it. by the way, that is not any longer almost winning - that is approximately playing a stable interest and approximately teamwork! that is approximately appreciating the forged performs by the different team, besides as your guy or woman. ideally that is approximately sportsmanship and success, on the two a private and team point. And that is not any longer that common to hit the ball as you think of - attempt it it sluggish, remembering the opportunities are against the hitter, and .3 hundred is a stable batting common!

If you think that it takes little talent lets see you hit a fastball. I bet you can't even hit the ball if you did you would get tired from running to first base.
