I have a manuscript for a prescriptive/cook book that is essentially a lifestyle guide. Anyone have any experience pitching ideas to an editor?

You don't really want to pitch an editor. You want to pitch to an agent or to a publisher. Get a copy of the current edition of Writer's Market and look for agents or authors who handle this type of project. Read up on what they want in a pitch. It will probably start with a query. Some will also ask for a sample chapter or two. Make sure you follow their style guidelines, and begin.

Keep in mind that you can send multiple queries, but once somebody asks for a copy to read, most will want exclusivity for a certain length of time. This is not unreasonable. Honor it.

Good luck.

Are you talking about an editor you want to edit the book for you? You don't pitch an editor you want to edit the book for you - you pay them for their services. As for a publisher, you pitch your work to a publisher either through a query and a book proposal since the book is technically non fiction. Or you have an agent use the book proposal to pitch it for you. Pax- C
