Home depot gives away free bird house kits occasionally for kids to make on their saturday workshops. Its a great design and our kids, cubscouts etc have made them and they have been homes, Im happy to say to several dozen birds who found them more than suitable to their liking!

See if you can find a cub scout handbook. They usually have patterns there. Also might try DIY network website.
