Just going by what is in the rulebook in the association that I show in (APHA), 3 and under is a filly, 4 and over is a mare. Weanlings and yearling males are considered a colt, two and over are considered stallions. Gelding are just that at whatever age.

Filly is a woman foal and could stay a filly up till they're a 3yo. at which era they boost right into a mare. same with a colt it particularly is a male foal up till they are 3 at which era they are seen a stallion and as quickly as they are bred they're a stud. A gelding is a stallion who has been altered. A yearling is merely that a horse the two filly or colt who's a 12 months old. Weanling is a foal who has been weaned from their dam up til the factor they boost right into a yearling. A suckling is merely that a foal who remains nursing. Dam is the mare a foal is OUT OF and a sire is the stud a foal IS by utilising. Dams have produce of dam and stallions have get of sire.

all depends on you. 3- 5 years old. 2 is still considered filly/ yearling. some people do call their horse a mare when it is 6. average is like 4 or something.

A filly is a mare when she turns 3-5, generally at the age of 4. That is when they are showing in under saddle classes and are basically full grown (not every breed). I think with QH it is 3 or 4. In warmbloods it might be 4 or 5....it just depends.

The terms change when the horse turns 5 years old. When they're under 5, a boy is a colt (unless he's gelded, then he's a gelding no matter how old he is) and a girl is a filly. When they turn 5, the colt becomes a stallion or horse (the two are used interchangeably) and a filly becomes a mare. The turning point is 5 years old. before she's 5, she's a filly. after she's 5, she's a mare.

Well now, we've covered it all....here's my opinion, and of course, because it's mine, I think that it is correct. A mare is an adult female horse.
Most of the time, a mare is a female horse over the age of three, and a filly is a female horse age three and younger. However, in Thoroughbred horse racing, a mare is defined as a female horse more than four years old; in harness racing a mare is a female horse more than three years old. A younger female horse is called a filly.

A female horse is considered a filly until the age of 5 or until it has it's first foal, then it is classified as a mare.
