Here's a list:
Haves:
-Be in good shape, because cheerleading is TOUGH and you can easily faint.
-Strength
-A LOUD voice
-Have to know the moves (Tuck, back flip, high V, low V, Herkey, etc etc.)
-A great smile. At competitions, you would have to smile A LOT in order for your team to win.
-Most teams require a back flip. I don't have a back flip, but I have a front handspring/round off.
-Lots of money. I mean, you don't have to be rich, but cheerleading is EXPENSIVE.

Doesn't Matter/Don'ts:
-Doesn't matter if you're fat or skinny. Some really great back spotters are fat.
-If you're pretty or not.
-You don't have to be bishy (you know what I mean) I'm a cheerleader, and I have the reputation of being the nicest person in the school
-Popular. Ohhhh I hate people who say "all cheerleaders a popular"

Good Luck!

It takes spirit. Don't listen to the people who say you have to have a perfect body and be blonde. The whole cheerleading squad at my school is african-american and some of their bodies are shaped differently than what people consider the "right" body type. Our squad has also won multiple awards. Just have spirit, smile, and get pumped about everything you do. Also a gymnastics backround is not always required. There is probably one girl on my school's squad who has a gymnastics backround.

depends... if you're at a school with serious cheerleading you need gymnastics talent and to be really skinny and small and light. If not, be loud and happy when you cheer.

Not all cheerleaders are mean, stupid or go out with the entire football team.

First and foremost, you have to be popular and "in style". Everyone tells you that that's not it, but trust me, that's the only way you get in. Second, you have to pretty much be skinny. I've seen overweight girls get in, but they were popular. Third, you have to do just about every flip and move that involves gymnastics.

I wish you luck!

Try some expensive Tumbling lessons and practice often.
