1/3 is a rational number. You know this because it is already in a "fraction" form, one whole number over another.

-√ 9.16 is an irrational number. Once you take the square root of 9.16, you get this really long decimal number that doesn't repeat. You can't show this as a fraction, so it's not a rational number.

I believe that they both belong to the group known as real numbers - the first is a positive real number and the second is a negative real number
