well technically, if fall starts on Sept. 23...then its in summer!

the last full day of summer is the 21st and the first full day of autumn is the 23rd, the the actual equinox depends on where you are. it probably will be somewhere in between, on the 22nd. the calendar says the 23rd because it's not entirely accurate.
