That's because most people (in the U.S. anyway) have been thoroughly indoctrinated by christian religious doctrines and monotheistic paradigms of reality.
Fortunately, this is gradually starting to change as the Zeitgeist slowly, but inexorably, moves towards intelligent inquiry and religious tolerance.

Because for the most part, they're called christians. Christianity makes up 33% of the world's population. If you throw in some more religions, and subtract the number of people who get lumped into the christian category, but aren't really christians, you'll get atleast 50% of earth's population believing there's only one god.
And even the tiniest little change to someone's faith can be a huge deal to people. A typical mindset that would explain this might be, "If one thing is different than it's been said for ages, who knows what else is different?"

Because they don't believe that they're real. The thing is, that science proves gods and stuff to be nothing more than stories. People tend not to believe in the older ones because they behaved to much like humans. But why people can't accept different gods for different aspects? They did once, but now they thing that everything has to be tied together at one end, and what if the different god/esses fought?

I believe its because people are "trained" into believing there is only ONE "God" as told to them in the "Christian" faith. I was raised in a Presbyterian home, and was forced in some ways to believe what my parents thought was right for me. Now that I am older and maybe wiser(?), I am branching out looking into other things that are out there. Paganism is something that seems to "fit" into what I really believe along with other Gods and Goddesses.
I hate to hear people who call themselves "Christians" blast other types of religions and beliefs if they don't go along with what they believe. That is why I have distanced myself from "organized" religion.
