WASHINGTON - Gen. David Petraeus' report to Congress and President Bush's nationally televised address have had little impact on Americans' distaste for the Iraq war and their desire to withdraw U.S. troops, polls show.

Fifty-four percent still favor bringing the troops home as soon as possible, a measurement that has not changed in months, according to a poll released Tuesday by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center. And despite slight improvements in peoples' views of military progress, more said the U.S. will likely fail in Iraq than succeed by 47 percent to 42 percent, about the same margin as in July.

Nearly half, or 49 percent, said Bush should remove more troops than he announced he would last week, when he said he would withdraw some forces but leave at least 130,000 in Iraq at least until next summer. Thirty-eight percent said Bush's plan goes far enough.

Overall, two out of three said their views on the war had not been changed by presentations last week by Bush and Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq.

In a separate survey by CBS News, fewer than a third said the roughly 30,000 additional troops Bush sent to the war zone this year have made things better, while the rest said they have had no impact or made things worse. That was similar to the findings of a CBS News-New York Times poll taken days before the remarks by Petraeus and Bush.

Only 22 percent said they are willing to keep large numbers of U.S. troops in Iraq longer than two more years, largely unchanged from the previous survey. Nearly half, or 49 percent, said they should stay less than a year while 23 percent said they should remain for a year or two.

The recent furor over moveon.org's ad criticizing Petraeus is just a smokescreen by the far right to mask the obvious shortcomings of not only the "surge" but the entire Iraq campaign as a whole. Overall, no opinions were changed and Petraeus simply parroted what the Bush White House wanted to be told, regardless of the situation on the ground. Basically, moveon.org was telling the truth, albeit in a rather harsh manner but nevertheless, still true.

What country are you from? I'd guess Iran or Syria. The reason you don't like General Petraeus or President Bush is because they're Americans, and they're sucessfully prosecuting the war on terror. They've kept America safe, and you and your demonrat traitor buddies just can't stand it.

No. Petraeus is someone who is actually there, fighting and seeing things that idiots like the people at moveon.org would never dream of. He actually knows what he is talking about, so choosing not to believe him, and to believe people that only thrive for attention, is beyond me. The loons at moveon.org wanted to hear that they were right, when they heard otherwise, they were quick to jump to titles such as traitor. They do not even know what the word means apperently, for the man is fighting on our side.

How many Generals did it take for Bush to find the one who would regurgitate the White House line, 3 or 4???

As I've maintained all along - a successful surge would change nothing......and it's not even successful.

I'm right again. What's the score now cons? 27 to 0?

*Funny how cons all crow when they say Congress all time low approval rating based on polls - but when it goes against them polls are all wrong.

The truth isn't always the answer people want. That's why the far left felt so betrayed!

Has nothing to do with what moveon.org says. War is never popular, it is sad to see people die. Don't make me sick and credit that terrorist-supporting organization. They told us nothing.

Maybe Petraeus shouldn't have thought that he could Betray Us and just told the truth instead.
