You know, those songs that hard rock/metal bands tend to do. Some good, some cheesy, and some getting overplayed to hell.

How would you define the term "power ballad" and give some good examples of such ballads over the decades.

I was wondering myself about Stairway to Heaven. But what about other heavy metal bands?

I say a Power Metal is a Rock Ballad, so emotional rock song usually about love, that starts soft but get's really heavy at the end. Well, not neccarily really heavy, but the key factor is the buildup the song has, and it needs to be a ballad, not just like a prog metal song or something, needs to be long and emotional.

A power balad is a slow dramatic usally long song. It usally brings out heartbreak and emotion. The power part of it is added by Electric guitar, drums and bass. Here are some Powers balads
Open Arms (journey) November Rain (Guns N roses) Babe (styx) Love hurts (Nathereth) Angel (Aerosmith) The search is over (survivor) and the flame (cheap trick). Most of the power ballads were from the 70s and 80s. It has been pretty much dead as of latley

I believe those songs are more associated with the "hair bands" from the 1980s. Those were the groups where the members had spiked long hair, wore lots of makeup, and had on spandex outfits. Groups that fit into this category are Poison, Cinderella, Whitesnake, Night Ranger, and Rainbow. These groups were mainly known for their hard rocking songs but every now and then, they did something slow and mellow. Those songs were the ones called the power ballads.

Power ballads are usually not so much ballads as they are love songs by some pretty awesome groups. Some of which i'll list but the list will always go on and on and on and on..

Skid Row "I Remember You"
Def Leppard "Love Bites"
Journey "Faithfully"
Europe "The Final Countdown"
Guns N Roses "November Rain"
Poison "Something To Believe In"
Poison "Every Rose Has Its Thorn"
Ozzy Osbourne "Mama I'm Comin Home"
Tesla "Love Song"
Guns N Roses "Don't Cry"
Firehouse "Love Of A Lifetime"
Tesla "Paradise"
Led Zepplin "Stairway To Heaven"
Motley Crue "Home Sweet Home"
Night Ranger "Sister Christian"
Whitesnake "Is This Love"
Sherriff "When I'm With You"
Meatloaf "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad"
REO Speedwagon "Keep On Loving You"

And the list goes on and on. Power Ballads are how we each percive them as individual people. Someone else who answered your question was correct in saying they can make you laugh or make you cry. There will never be Power Ballads like there were in the 80's the hairbands will live forever in all of us!!

Thought about this for a while and Rush's "Closer to the Heart" live is vastly underated whereas Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" is totally overrated (especially the screechy bit). Michael Bolton? Don't even go there.
