I don't believe there is any hard and fast line defining the outer limits of sane and insane. If you were to ask a conventional thinking mental health care professional they probably have some general guidelines by which they make judgements about a person's mental state.
I believe if there is a line it has to do with being a danger to oneself and/or others or being so crazed that one destroys the means by which one survives. Like getting kicked out a living situation, or getting fired from a job. Obviously those events also happen to sane people so that doesn't really work. What I am trying to say is when one's thoughts and subsequent behaviour cause one to bring about events that not only are not desired but actually significantly undermine one's well being. But then again, I have known people who fairly much destroyed the infrastructures of their lives yet who I wouldn't have called insane.
Now that you have me really thinking about the question I realize how truly difficult this is to answer lol.
Many people have defined me as crazy throughout my life but really I was just different in my styles and "marched to the beat of a different drum". At times I acted impetuously and spontaneously and even perhaps unwisely but I was not crazy.
Really the definitions of crazy and insane are very subjective and personal.

We have not defined sanity or insanity so that makes it very hard to answer the question in a meaningful way.
But here goes anyways :)
There is not a hard line for most people. In all things mental and mood, we all waiver at least a little bit.
That said, there are CLEARLY some forms of mental illness and mood disorder that make it difficult for a person to function "within society", they have a hard time getting over the line to sanity for any length of time. This might suggest that there are some people that are so sane that they don't ever cross the line of insanity, but I'm not convinced of any truth to that.
We all have some fear that is not a priori, some reasoning that is not scientific, some fantasy that is belief. But do you define that as insane?

i think there are some lines, but also a lot of gray areas, often what is called crazy or sane is just what is currently popular, or else something practiced in a particular area, by a specific culture,,,,
but yes, i think there is a line that one can cross over, where they lose touch with reality and imagine things as actually being present when they are not, concrete things, as opposed to the wide scope of mental things (which really cant be proven if they are there or not) for instance, someone sees bugs on a wall when no one else sees them,,, they are probably hallucinating, but if someone hears a voice talking to them, who really knows if they are imagining it or if its a spirit communicating?
i would say the main line between crazy and sane is the one that does not cause you happiness, or else causes destructive , negative things

Crazy people don't know they're crazy, so they'll never ask the question.
I wrote last week, any dumber you'd be a star, and in most cases is true.
Mostly though, if you believe in something, you'll work it till something comes of it.
Getting the smarts, takes a lot of door knocking, before they come knocking on your door.
Staying on the treadmill, most, that are successful, do exactly that.
Bruises heal quickly, the experience priceless.

I think that it really depends you know? But then again, being sane just makes you crazy. And about how crazy people always have something going on for them, I agree. Just look at Borat, Taylor Hicks, Sanjaya(ugh!), and Albert Einstein. People considered Albert Einstien to be crazy, you know. That it until he proved to be quite the genius.

Sanity describes behavior that is considered socially acceptable. In many cases it is not an actual mental condition--it's just the negative public's perception.

I don't think there is any person who can say they are 100% sane. I think we all have our little quirks things that happened when we grew up that defined some weird little thing about us. But there are definately different levels. I would say that its definately not black or white. There is much grey area.

Forget Disraeli; there is no fine line between genius and insanity, it's a gray, shady area.
It is only determined by perspective.
