Gatorade and other sports drinks were designed to replace sweat and fluids that are lost in older children, adolescents, and adults, so they're not particularly targeted to the clinical situation of a young infant who is losing particular minerals, electrolytes and fluids because of illness.

For one thing Gatorade is basically favored anti-freeze. Think I'm kidding? It contains propylene glycol, a substance that can be converted from a bio-diesel product and the FDA says this about it:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has determined that propylene glycol in or on cat food has not been shown by adequate scientific data to be safe for use. Use of propylene glycol in or on cat food causes the feed to be adulterated and in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. 21CFR589.1001

Gatorade also contains a LOT of sugar which your kid does NOT need if they're already throwing up or have diarrhea. He does need sodium (and some potassium) though to help him stay hydrated which Pedialyte has more of.

I don't know what ALL the differences are but your best bet is juice or water with an older child and if you use Pedialyte, keep in mind that while it will help them restore fluids theys need etc, too much will make them sicker.

Pedialyte seems to have more sodium & less carb per serving than Gatorade.

Cookiesmom is absolutely right. Not to mention that Gatorade has sugar in it. Alot of sugar can actually lead to diarrhea in infants.
