Sheep are really, really boring. think about it? There is only one song I can remember about sheep, and it's about wool [ fascinating ]. Sheep look fluffy and cuddly [ in real life they are itchy, and stink - and are incredibly dumb. ]
Also there are a lot of Christian references to sheep/shepherds, so that is a comforting references.
I hate lamb/mutton, and am allergic to wool, so I have to count something less irritating - like turtles - they take so long to jump you get bored waiting, and fall asleep.

Perhaps because sheep are also envisioned in a peaceful setting and counting anything can cause boredom which could potentially lead to sleep. Then again maybe it was a drunken Scotsman who alluded to a questionable form of sexual pleasure. LOL. Who really knows? As for me I count my own fingers slowly winding down on the kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyyyybbbbbbbbbbbbbbbooooooooooaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrddddddddddd????????????????? What? huh? Am I awake?

You could as well count pigs or flowers or anything else. The reason they came up with that theory is that counting the same thing again and again keeps your mind focused and help you relax because you empty your mind from any other thought. I do't know who came up with the concept of the sheep...

I mean really, have you ever been around a sheep farm? They got loads of skidmarks of crap hanging out of their booty, and they don't know when to shut up. I was travelling over a moor one day in North England, when I baby sheep decided to run across the road. I just barely avoided hitting the sheep or the rock walls on either side of the one lane road. Sheep are stupid, dirty, and noisy. Who thought of this?

I don't know, but I think they used sheep because sheep are soft and fluffy like pillows, and if you imagine all these soft fluffy pillows floating by it makes you fall asleep ... although then why don't we just count pillows? they smell better than sheep ... and if you're trying to fall asleep, chances are you've already GOT a pillow, and why would you need to count more of them? I mean, you've only got one head, for heaven's sake.
maybe I'm mistaken ... yep, I think I am.
oh well.
that happens.
;O)

Have a nice day!

I have no idea who came up with it, but why sheep is because they're white and fluffy like clouds. It doesn't work for me, but counting in general tends to work.

i imagine it came from generations of sheperds who found that they fell asleep while counting the sheep in the herd - that is while they were sitting in the sun looking down on the flock.

Can you think of anything more boring? Not counting my ex-husband, of course. It's the repetition. Boredom has been known to put a lot of people to sleep. Good Luck & Blessings
