I wanted the local bank to trace a check my father wrote many years ago. My dad is long gone, but when I inquired, the bank's representative said that due to the new privacy laws, I would have to prove the person's account I wanted to research was indeed my father. Now how can prove that?

Your birth certificate, and his death certificate.

Even if you can prove that you are his child, you may not necessairly have rights to his records. The executor of his will, if he had one, may be a good place to start.

If he is not deceased, and just 'gone from your life', you probably won't be given access, no matter what connection you have to him.
