Second sentence is correct. In the first sentence, it should be "the boys' basketball team". The possessive "boy's" indicates a basketball team belonging to only one boy, not a group of boys. The statement "the girls play every other Thursday" is correct without a possessive because it does not say the girls' team, it only says "the girls". The girls can play every other Thursday, whether they have a team or not. The second sentence is correct because the schoolbooks do not belong to Carl and Sara, jointly. If they did, it would be Carl and Sara's schoolbooks.

The first one should read
The boys' basketball team plays every Friday, but the girls' plays every other Thursday.

Boy's means one boy's team and the girls' should be plays, not play. The apostrophe should be on the end when showing a possessive plural noun.

2nd one is alright.

Carl's and Sara's schoolbooks are on the kitchen table.

Difficult. Here are a couple of sites that discuss the rules for possessive nouns. I think, based on those rules, that the second is correct, but I find this stuff difficult too!! I think the first sentence should use boys' rather than boy's. I hope you get several answers for comparison.

The second one is correct. In the first one, it should be "boys'". "Girls" is ok if you mean that all the girls play at that time, rather than saying the girls' team plays at that time.
