While I don't want to even know the WHY of the rationale behind Killing Llama for hides to be RUGS; SKINS don't make very good RUGS no matter the animal.
In my experience a Llama is worth far more over the course of its lifetime, for what is SHEARED from it. The meat certainly isn't much for marketing; nor are the skins.
Without knowing how you deifine "preserve" or in what context you intend the USE of such a piece; certainly initial TANNING would be the valid, first step.
