It's b. the cells may lose the ability to perform other functions.

Once a cell becomes differentiated (different from other types of cells, like a brain cell vs a skin cell) it gains the ability to perform functions other cells can't; and at the same time it loses the potential for abilities that other types of specialized cells can do.
