Robert Jordan died yesterday.

He and my family have my deepest sympathies, but it caused me to reflect that I've been reading his series for 17 years. It is almost unbelievable to me that it has been going on that long. Not to sound crass, but I was wondering given that this had been a lingering illness does anyone know if he had scripted out his final books. I feel bad saying it, and not to take anything away from his tragic loss, but do you think we will find out his intentions on how the story ends?

I found out about Rob's death only about an hour ago, and it was a huge gut-punch to me. Especially so shortly after David Gemmel.

As far as I understand it, the story was complete - Robert had all his notes finished, and had also apparently narrated the story to his brother or somebody about a week before his death. Add to that the fact that his wife is also his editor, and it's likely to see publication, just like David's final book did at the hands of his wife.

On a more personal note, I feel the need to thank Robert for all the hours (years!) of pleasure his writing provided me, along with more than a little philosophical questioning and existential pondering! That's what I enjoyed most about both his writing and that of David Gemmel - that they could craft an amazing story that nevertheless made you think really hard about your attitudes and opinions. If there's one thing I took away from Robert's work, it's the question of Power, and how it influences, while David's work showed that nobody deserves judgement, and that everybody deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Thanks both.

According to the news and his last comments on the series, he was intending to end the series in two more books. The only way I can see that happening now is with the use of ghostwriters.

He had written extensive notes for someone else to finish the book. Days before he died, he told his family how the story will end. Since his wife is and editor, I'm sure it will be finished.

omg it made me so sad that he died!! i love his books so much... i know what you mean tho...i felt horrible about it, but couldnt stop wondering about the last book...i knew he was sick but always assumed he would finish it. on dragonmount.com, though, it says he has taped a lot of the book, and that he told his wife and cousin everything that happened. since the series was so important to him, i'm sure his wife and cousin will make sure they finish the last one, even if a bit of it is in a different style. i hope its not too long i really really need to find out what happens...

Apparently he dictated a detailed outline for all the plot threads and the ending before he died.

You can find more details on the numerous fansites.

I read on wotmania.com that Jordan had lined up a "army of writers" transferring his audio to written form. I doubt it is top priority though...
