Plus kids out late at night getting hit by cars and its dark and just kind of weird. Kids should go to indoor parties with their costumes on - a controlled environment supervised by adults. Wouldn't that be better?

I'm disappointed by most of these answers. If you watch your kids, fine, but not everyone does.

for the dumbbells who didn't understand the question, i meant outlaw kids going out and knocking on doors - not the holiday itself. i said kids could go to parties indoors where its controlled and safe. READ next time - pay attention and maybe you'll get it right.

I don't think it should be outlawed. I do think that there should be a time limit on when this occurs (no kids out after dark!). I do think that a few weirdos can ruin it for everyone! Plus it would nice to have a central place to gather for the kids to have fun after dark! A nice wholesome, old fashioned carnival style atmosphere with games and treats!

We have a party every year for family and close friends. We do not dare go out and drive thru all the traffic. It is a BLAST!! We go all out for Halloween, with costumes and decorations, the kids have even made haunted houses before, it's awesome. We buy all the food and all the candy. (And the booze and the dj, but that's besides the point.)

We have in the past taken my nieces and nephews just down the block to hit a few houses, but we monitor the candy. If anything, they get sick from eating too much. Also we go to one of the local churches that has a yearly Harvest Festival. For like $1.50 or $2 you play games eat burgers, hot dogs, chips, sodas, ects. and it's over by 10pm. The kids have fun and your 2 bucks go to the church.

A former co-worker of mine got together with her neighbors and they had a street party. That's a great idea if you don't want to be out and about.

So as I do see your concern about safety and all, I think outlawing Halloween is just going waaaaay too far, don't ya think?

Because if there is any REAL dangerous holiday, it's gotta be X-mas and all those crazy shoppers!!!

The media is to blame for people being scared of halloween. They have depicted halloween as pervert/poisoner holiday when there have not been significant numbers of those problems occur on halloween.

So no, it should not be outlawed. Parents should always look out for their kids, like making sure they trick or treat in groups with supervision, and parents should inspect their loot too, but banning things out of propaganda fear is not what the USA is all about (or at least not what it used to be about)

Try providing some numbers on halloween poison victims each year. I think you will find they are statistically insignificant.

As for kids being hit by cars, well, once again, parental supervision, proper reflective garb for night walking.

Dont take the stance that we need to legislate people into their homes at a cerfew on a certain night out of the year out of fear.

Look into National Night Out, if you are so afeared of the darkness....

Find me at least three newsstories about children being hit by cars on Halloween, and I'll admit it's a valid concern.

It just doesn't happen often enough to make it sound like kids are getting hit by cars like a bowling ball speeds through the pins.

Same goes for the poisoned candy. In all my life, I've never known anyone to get poisoned candy.

It's just not reasonable to say that "all the weirdos in the world" poison candy, or that children (plural) get hit by cars on Halloween.

Short answer, no, I don't think it should be outlawed.

BTW, the parents who DON'T watch their kids on Halloween night, like you mention in your extra info, don't watch them the other 364 days of the year, either. It has nothing to do with Halloween.

You can make whatever rules you like, but don't make the mistake of trying to legislate what you personally think is best for everyone. It is not your right to dictate how everyone else ought to live.

Anyway there's a major difference between a parent or a group of parents or a school setting such a rule, and a LAW being made that says others cannot celebrate as it suits them. This sort of minute government control should not be treated lightly.

There is no doubt that controlled indoor activities are safer, but it rather misses the point. Got to get out and embrace life and look fear in the face so that we are less afraid.

When i was a kid and i went trick or treating i never got any poison candies, i did get a couple of razor blades stuck in my bag once and a while but would i trade those times for a controlled environment supervised by adults......heck no 80% of the fun is running around in your costumes showing off to your friends or jumping out of the shadows scareing complete strangers out of there wits or minding your own business and someone scareing you, then after trick or treating going home and watching fireworks, besides weirdos come and go but Halloween is forever.

Hallowe'en should not be outlawed. poison candy? getting hit by cars? What other excuses are going to be vomited up next? You mean to say that parents have become so lazy and uncaring that they will not escort their young children around trick or treating? That they will not take time to see if any of the treats have been tampered with? And keep the kids safe by avoiding busy streets or at least guide them in a safe manner. You really are someone to wonder about....plus anyone else who can't be bothered to make hallowe'en a fun night for the kids.

Well gosh, don't you think we should outlaw Christmas cos everybody maxes out their credit cards & spends way too much money? Thereby causing debt, anxiety, cash flow problems & distress?????

Makes about as much sense.......

Halloween & trick or treating - when done RIGHT - is for fun & nothing more. I sure do wish folks would let up off of the criticisms & the negativity.........

Thats why parents are there (or atleast should be there with their children)... gosh I had a total blast at haloween when i was a kiddo and so does my daughter when i take her trick or treating ... we have some great memories ... also she is not allowed to eat any candy until we get home and i go through it all ... and the neighborhoods we trick or treat in are very nice the we know the majority of the folks!
