If you are at the very beginning of the road, I highly recommend the book "Sophie's World" (summary, link 1; ordering, link 2). It gives a pretty good summary of philosophy throughout history and does so in a manner that is entertaining and relatively easy to grasp.

Once you have read that, you can ask yourself what part of philosophy most interests you and investigate further. You will know who to ask about and where to look for them. Check it out!

greetings:

"since phylosophy is so fly..." i'd suggest something to get the juices flowing... there's a book by robert palmer called "the unbearable heaviness of philosophy" or something like that...

it's a good primer on just western philosophy in general up to wittgenstein.

BUT if you want to get dirty with it and jump in feet first then start with descartes "a discourse on method" which is how i cut my first tooth. from there then read kant's a 'critique of pure reason' and THEN hume's 'a treatise on human nature'... it's kinda out of order this way but it seems to make better sense doing it this way...

everything else is gravy after this...

good luck "fly-jock"
