My friend who has visited Japan on several occasions says there is liitle to no crime in the city of Tokyo. Is he exagerating?
Are there any official statistics I can look at online to varify his claims?

My wallet fell out of the back pocket of my jeans on a road near the Ginza in Tokyo.

Three hours later I was in my hotel and the reception called. "Mr B", they said. "Sagisawa-San is in reception with your wallet. he found it on the sidewalk and checked to find your hotel key inside. He has brought it to the hotel. Sayonara".

There was a story on the news about a month ago about a guy who was caught shoplifting.....he was chased out of the shop after putting everything back on the shelves, he got half way down the street and then stabbed himself in the chest. (He died). This is an extreme example, but it goes to show how shameful crime is considered in Japan. I really wouldn't worry about crime rates in Tokyo or anywhere else in Japan if you plan to visit.

Crime rate is low because its just part of their society. It would be considered dishonorable and shameful upon oneself and their family name. Its just something embedded within their culture. Now I'm not saying there is no crime, but its not like American 6 o'clock news where every other night you hear about someone getting shot because someone forgot to give them change at a mickey d's. And above those kids are not exaggerating, you can basically drop your wallet on a train and a police officer will make their best to contact you to come claim it (with everything still present in the wallet).

American crime rate is just high for no reason, I have taken a sociology class and this was a topic. The best conclusive reason as to why we thought Americans tend to be so violent is because we find in media violence to be entertaining, most have low patience and tolerance, and just plain miscommunication. Its really fascinating, in Detriot (well enough said) very high crime rate/murders, across Lake Michigan on the other side is a city in Canada and they had one homicide within a 5yr span.

Crime rate statistics in Tokyo alone exists only in Japanese. So I give you crime rate data of Japan as a nation.

On Blue Peter, they said Japanese people were very good because they put these really good chopsticks on the side of a public walkway and placed a camera and nobody stole it. Of course, there are crimes in every country, Japan has hardly any compared to countries with people dying practically every other day (okay thats exaggerating!)

sorry, I think i run off the subject a bit.
