So, I'm 27 weeks pregnant, almost 28 (which means 7 months and on to the 3rd trimester! yay!), and everyone I run into who has had children already say that I am still tiny. That I need to gain more weight and that I need to fatten up my baby...

I've already gained about 27 pounds (my doctor told me between 25-35 pounds was what I was aiming for), but everyone keeps telling me my stomach is still small. Now, I know he moves quite a bit, so I know he's doing well in that department. Every ultrasound I've had, they've said he's a bit on the small side; developing fine, just a bit small.

My question then is this... does this mean I'm just going to have a smaller baby? I was only 5 lbs 8 oz when I was born and I was only 4 days early. My bf was also 5 lbs 8 oz and he was 2 weeks early.

I gained 39 pounds with my daughter and she was born at 5 pounds 11 ounces and I only gained 20 pounds with my son and he was born at 7 pounds 8 ounces. It was funny because my midwife said when I was pregnant w/my daughter that she thought I was going to have an 8+ pound baby and with my son she thought I would have another small baby! I weighed 5p 10o and on my due date and my husband was 7p 6o and was a week early.
Very good question, my thought is that maybe you will just have a small baby due to the fact that you were both small. I know I was small at birth and my daughter was the same, my entire family says she is a replica of me walking around at that age, so maybe it is just genetics!! Good Luck w/the pregnancy!

Your size is FINE. If you have a family history of babies on the small side, you may well have a smaller baby. However, fattening yourself up to increase the size of your baby is BS. If you wrote that you'd only gained 5 pounds, I'd be concerned, but your weight gain is a the higher end of the recommended amount, so I certainly wouldn't eat more!

If you're eating healthy and your doctor is pleased with your weight gain, then you are already doing the best you can for your child.

Well, as long as the ultra sounds say that he's developing just fine, and you're gaining some weight...You're eating correctly and taking your prenatal vitamins like you should, then everything should be alright!
If there was any cause for alarm, I think the doctor's would've told you already.
Smoking can cause low birth rate in a fetus and cause the baby to be born tiny/small...If you're smoking...or coming into contact with second hand smoke from daddy...Make daddy step outside or walk away from you.
Usually baby doesn't really start to grow until about the 8-9th month...
If you're still concerned...You can get a second opinion and have more tests ran.
Good Luck to you!

Your baby is perfectly fine...and unless your doctor tells you he or she has a concern for your babies health..don't worry

Your baby does not need to be 10 lbs to be healthy..

Chances are if you and your husband were both on the smaller side your baby will be too, if you are slight of size as an adult he could just take after you..

You are right on track with your weight gain don't be worried and don't try and put on extra weight it will only mean more work for you afterwards to lose it.

Good luck and ignore anyone who tells you from looking at your stomach that you are too small they need there eyes checked!

I am in the same arena as you. Yeah, you may have a smaller baby...that's how the babes run in your families, haha
I walk a lot (approx. 3 miles just on way home from work), and I think my baby is sitting lower in my uterus because I feel the kicks and stuff down by my pelvic bones. My baby is also measuring up to be about the normal size. I went for my 3hr glucose test and while waiting I was much smaller (or carried differently) than women who were 23-28 weeks. Just depends on the woman! Good Luck!

I wouldnt worry about your weight gain, it sounds good to me. As for if your baby will be smaller - maybe. Babies gain most of their weight during the third trimester, so just because he's small now doesnt mean he will be when he's born, he could gain a lot of weight between now and then.As long as everything else looked okay on your ultrasounds, dont worry about it, no need to cause yourself added stress.

If your doctor is not overly concerned about this, then I would say you are fine. You have to remember that your baby gains the most weight during the last few weeks of your pregnancy. Try not to listen to other people's comments. They are commenting on their own experiences, and everybody differs in that area. It also depends on your body type. There are women who don't even look pregnant, then you find out they just delivered an 8lb baby!

I'm not a Mom, but I've heard that if you are a smaller girl yourself, your baby won't be as big, and that's normal. I think petite girls don't always get as big either.

But either way... if you're adding more weight, it doesn't mean you're adding it to the BABY... just on YOU! 27 lbs seems like a fine amount to gain... don't let people encourage you to get really chubby, it will just make taking the weight off later more difficult.

Possibly. But your ob/gyn will check the size of your baby by ultrasound scanning and reassure you as you go along. Scans are great for this - you will get accurate measurements of your baby's head circumference, head to rump length and even the approximate weight. You will be told if the baby's head is larger/smaller than normal or average for that particular stage and the same goes for baby's legs short/long etc. Enjoy your pregnancy and trust you will give birth to a healthy baby.

Tell them to shut it! hee hee! You really won't know until the baby comes but its possible your baby could be a little small. It really all depends on how you are carrying - your baby could be further back and further down therefore you look smaller...I wouldn't worry if your doctor isn't worried. BEING SMALL AT THIS POINT IS GREAT! Don't try to gain more because trust me...that last month you will pack it on. Congrats and best wishes!
