i try so very hard to maintain professionalism but it is so very, very, very, very hard to do
any suggestions?

I hate working with the public. It is enough to make one think that the average IQ is 17. Get out while you can.

I always wanted a job as a lighthousekeeper. But they're all electronically run now-no keepers needed otherwise I would suggest that job. However I saw a documentary a coupl;e of months ago-very interesting. All the lighthouses and lightships etc need maintaining and there are an awful lot of them. There is a team of men and women who travel round refurbishing them.
If you have a taste for adventure and you like the sea-it could provide the tranquillity of mind you are looking for without being boring or lonely.
Don't forget-God sees all your good deeds and will help you if you ask Him x

I know how you feel, i worked at Argos for over 5 yrs. :-(
There is nothing you can do other than scoring little victories (eg: work slower, keep them waiting, try to humiliate them)
A big bloke was abusive to me whilst buying a set of weights(2 boxes each weighing 20kg = 40kg) he wanted to pick them up from the loading bay, i said "no problem" & picked the boxes up one in each hand & added " i'll carry them down stairs to the loading bay for you" Now the bloke got lots of funny looks 'cos he was quite muscly & i am 5ft and waighed just 40kg myself.
I carried the boxes of weights round the corner of stock room out of sight & just dropped them on the floor ('cos they were too heavy for me to carry & got a lad to take them to the loading bay & i just hid round the corner for a few minuets to make it seem like i'd took the weights downstairs.)
But the thing is, all the other customers saw me carry what was obviously too heavy for me to manage & the shamed big bloke just scurried off. You could almost hear peoples thoughts of 'shame on you' towards the man. lol ;-)

So i guess what i'm saying is... treasure the little victories, they get you through the day & give you something to look back on with pride. ;-)

Sorry i rambled on, but aahh(sighs)... they are the good memories. lol

It's just like the old saying about wild animals, "they are more scared of you than you are of them". I get some stinkers with my job too, but you are usually the one that gives them the bad news so you're the first one to get the venting. Most of the time when I explain what's going on and their alternatives they calm down. If they don't calm down then you tell them to come back when they can discuss things rationally.

If you are in customer service you need to realise that most likely they are frustrated to the point of insanity by the time they get sent/shuffled/transferred/hung up on/pawned off ... to you. It's very hard to get anything done right any more. Heck, it's hard to get anything done...period. Try to be understanding and helpful. And stay calm and listen. Make it a goal of yours to have a customer who comes to you angry, leave happy.

You have to understand that they are not cursing you out, they are cursing the company out, you just happen to be the representative. Stand there and let them get it all out, when they are finished tell them you will deliver the message to the correct person and have a nice day.

Just keep smiling and dont loose ur nerves. If u dont react to their anger and cursing, and continue to be nice to them, they may stop behaving that way.
Sadly there is no way u can change people. Especially not when u meet them just for some time.
GL with ur job!

Just remember you are dealing with frustration,,
i always found that starting a conversation with 'I can understand your anger' calms a situation by showing empathy, after all we have all been in frustrating situations
at some point in life. a bit of sympathy goes along way

The art is to ACT not react to something. If that happened to me when I was at work I would point out to them that I do not go to work to get abuse and would they kindly change their attitude, or leave and come back when they can be civil
