If a woman is breastfeeding and the father wanted to try to take the baby a few nights a week would he be allowed to?

I would think there's a solid argument that could be made against the father taking the child overnight. He could still have visitation, just a few hours at a time (with bottled breast milk), but not overnight. Strictly speaking, visitation doesn't have to be allowed at all until a court order mandates it; and at the time of the court hearing, the argument should be made against overnight visitation until the child is weaned from breastmilk.

Besides, it's best for the child to be able to breastfeed as often and as much as it needs to -- visitation around the breastfeeding would be an ideal situation for all concerned. The custody order or the visitation order can be altered after the child has been weaned from breastmilk. No custody or visitation order is set in stone -- they CAN be changed.

If a woman is breastfeeding, she can't be away from the baby for more than 2-3 hours at a time, depending on the age of the baby. When the baby is first born, he/she will need to be breastfed every 2 hours. You can usually work out a schedule of pumping, but it helps for the baby to be a little older. The mother would have to pump a quite a lot of milk in order to send it with the baby and then the baby might not take to a bottle. My son was breastfed and he never would take a bottle. I wouldn't think it would be a good idea for him to take the baby for a couple of nights. He needs to think of what is best for the baby, not for him or the mother. But if you mean just to have the baby for the evening a couple of night a week, then that shouldn't be a problem.

There's no reason the woman couldn't pump a supply for the baby to have while away. Breastfeeding is great, but custody/visitation should not be based on it.
