As with everything, everyone has a different experience. I was induced with my 1st and had no problems at all. I'm actually hoping to be induced again!
I can't speak for the pain as I had an epidural but I delivered my son vaginally just fine. It was not a scary experience at all.

You're only 2 days overdue - and to think these due dates are rules of thumbs!! You're in the zone anywhere between 37 and 41 weeks - you're right that if you're induced you could have a prolonged labor but if you wait until it happens naturally, it could be 4 hours! I was over a week and a half late with my second - if I had been under the care of OBs, they would have induced me at 1 week late - but since I was with midwives (my saviors!), they were just going to take a look (sono) - instead of going to my sono appt, I went to the hospital and had the baby in 2 hours from the first "I don't feel so well" to having an air-breather!
How do they know the baby is too big for your body - have you had troubles in the past? Plenty of small women have had normal to large babies with no problem - it was what they were designed to do! If I was you, I would wait until at least 1 week post-due (which really isn't late) and get a sono to make sure the baby / placenta was doing OK and then reassess... If you're running the risk of a c-section because of the size and you're running the risk of a c-section because of being induced, it wouldn't cost you anything to wait! But I am not a medical professional and had a decent time carrying and delivering - I just happen to have an opinion that there is probably too much intervention these days.

Well ive never had to be manually dialated but i have been induced 3 out of 4 times. Never had a C section so thats a tall tale. Yes it hurts but labor in general hurtsIf it makes you feel any better I did it all 4 times without the help of pain meds so its not imbearable pain just discomfort. None of the old wives tales work except sex and walking both help not to bring labor on but help for a smooth easy delivery. I knwo your fear im 21 weeks with my 5th and even tho i should be an expert im still scared. When the do induce you spend as much time as you can on your side, sit up move positions as much as possible.Staying on your back will cause nothing more then alot of aches and back pains. Just bear in mind that women have done this for years and there is nothing to it. I would be lying if I said it didnt hurt but I can tell you all the pain goes away as soon as you set eyes on your baby

Sometimes babies just need help. I tried everything with my first daughter and she was evicted a week late. My second I opted to schedule an induction 3 days before my due date and she actually wanted to come out that day anyway (I went to the hospital in labor). Some people say that nipple stimulation helps bring on contractions. Red raspberry leaf tea is just to help your uterus during pregnancy, it really doesn't do much to start labor. Evening primrose oil will help soften your cervix. There is nothing that will for sure put you into labor except pitocin the synthetic form of the hormone oxytocin. Good luck. The baby will come when he/she is ready or you get induced. Getting induced is not as bad as people make it out to be. ELVs

I was induced and its really not that bad. I think the IV was the worst part. Just make sure you dont eat before you go in. They forgot to tell me that and I had to be there at 5am well I ended up having to wait until 10am cause I ate. Then I was in labor until 12:57am when I had him. I almost had to have a C-section because they increased the amount of petocin that they gave me too fast and I was having one huge contraction and the babys heart rate dropped really low but they just rolled me back and forth and everything was fine. I got an epidural so I only actually felt one real contraction. The real ones HURT but if you get the epidural before you start having them you wont feel a thing. Dont be scared, I was freaking out but it was actually sooooo much easier than I thought it was going to be. Good luck!!

Don't be scared about being induced. It is not all that bad. Just make sure you get an epidural and you will be absolutely fine. Even if you end up having a C-section, you will still get to experience the labor part. Just try to focus on one thing and breathe.
My doctors induced me a week before due date b/c they said there wasn't enough room in my uterus and they thought it would be better if she was delivered earlier. She was actually a very small baby... only 5 lbs 12 oz and 19" long... Doctors estimate size based on measurments but they don't always get it right. So relax!
Make sure you have a good hearty meal the night before (before you check into the hospital). They will not allow you to eat from the moment you check in until the baby is born, so it's important that you remember to eat something before going to the hospital. When you check in the night before, they will prep you and check all your vitals.
Then very early in the morning (usually around 5 AM) they will begin with the pitocin. You probably won't feel much until a few hours later. With me, the only thing that bothered me was that I couldn't really get up and walk around that easily because I was wired up to the fetal monitors and the pitocin machine. I was able to walk around my bed, and sit in the rocker, but it was difficult to do much of anything else. By the time noon rolled around, I was beginning to get more dilated but my water still hadn't broken so they broke it for me. After that I had to stay in the bed.
About a half hour later I started to feel contractions beginning. The contractions were not that bad, I could feel pressure and a little pain but it wasn't unbearable. They did increase in intensity after a while, and by 3 I was having some back labor so they gave me something to "take the edge off" which knocked me out. I slept until about 4:30 and then went into hard labor, at which point, they FINALLY gave me the epidural. After the epidural, it was easy. I felt pressure still, but no more back pain. (the back pain was hard to deal with!) Around about 5:30 I felt the urge to push, and the doctor showed up for another check and we went right into action. My baby was born at 5:54 PM.
Would I have done it differently had I not had to have been induced? Sure... I wanted to try that water birth thing, or some of the other non-traditional methods for keeping in control of the pain. I didn't like the drugs that knocked me out because I felt like I had less control - I essentially woke up in hard labor and had a hard time regaining control of my breathing... but I am glad I got to choose the date and the doctor! :) Bottom line - talk to your doctor about your fears. If you are afraid of the pain, be sure to order an epidural. If you wait too long to decide if you will need it or not, you may lose your chance to get it! Also, talk to the nurses about different things that can help with the pain. Try different positions, try focal breathing (lamaze) try a recommended drug that can help ease the pain - just make sure to ask if it is the kind that makes you sleep or not - and good luck!

Induced labor is great! You know when you're going to have the baby, it usually goes faster which means its less painful. I was induced with my daughter and I had her 4 hours later. I went into labor naturally with my son and I was in labor for over 6 hours and ended up having to get an epidural.

I suggest that you try and relax as much as you can over the next couple days and try not to think about the induction as the added stress and anxiety may be causing your body to tense up and stall your labor from starting naturally. Thats what I did- I was 2 weeks late and they were going to induce in 3 days and I delivered with no help 2 days later. congradulations and best wishes!

Dont sweat it. I was enduced... twice... and I survived. You will be fine. If your scared have them give you an epidural. You will not regret it. Tell them.... "I want an epidural as soon as you think I am ready for one. " This way, your pain will be minimal.
Huggggggssssss..... take a deep breath, relax, go listen to some soft music, and dont think about it until you have to on Friday. The baby is in control not you, so try not to be 'in control'... get used to the baby calling the shots. You got 18 years of it ahead of ya.

Rasberry leaf tea can be found at most health food stores. You can also do prim rose on your cervix. Here is some info for you.

You will likely need to go to a health food store to find most of these products and as always run it by your doctor before trying any of it.
