Am I the only one that has noticed that a lot of people have almost no imagination when it comes to picking a halloween costume? "Hmmm...Do you think sexy devil/angel is a good idea?", or, "How about goth/ punkrocker, would that be cool?"
Cmon you guys! There must be some of that childlike brilliance tucked away in those heads of yours somewhere. Don't tell me that a short skirted, low cut princess type thing that you picked off a shelf is the best you can come up with! What happened to the days when people made their own costumes from scratch. Hasn't anybody noticed yet that the "cool" and "original" costumes that you are desperately asking about here are the ones you have to pour your heart and time into ( not to mention a little money and a good idea)?
So who's with me!!? Down with prepackaged conformity! Up with homemade, well thought out Halloween greatness! Let's create something to Ooooh and Ahhhh about!

I agree that a store bought is good as a starting point, I guess I am just tired of seeing the same old lackluster ideas every year. And I think there is nothing wrong with the classics either... I just believe people should make more effort. With a little creativity and just stuff you have around the house, its easy to make a boring costume into something really great that will stand out in a crowd.
Oh and @ Trans Fat.... I read the rest of your replies to other peoples questions and just have to say that well thought out and intelligent answers such as yours are a really good reflection of who you are as a person. Your parents must be SO proud.

I agree with you! I'm not totally against store-bought costumes, but the homemade ones that show some creativity and originality are the best!

Once--no, twice--I dressed up as half-bride, half-groom. Two years ago I dressed up as the Whore of Babylon from Revelation 18. In 1998, the year Shari Lewis died, I dressed up as Lamb Chop in Mourning. I've also been a Patriotic Jester--bought the hat, pieced together the costume.

This year I'm going as Wonder Woman. I might buy the costume from the store, or I might patch it together myself.

Music remakes are called 'covers.' The reason they don't call them remakes is because newer versions are virtually unchanged unlike a 90 minute movie which by its very length leaves it open to more reinterpreation (different characters, settings, etc.). And you have to keep in mind that a lot of songs popularized by artsists you know were never written by those artists anyway. The songwriting artist is in decline at the majors so if you really want original material, start reseaching artists on the indies. But I certainly agree. Hollywood and major record labels really are ramming the crap down our throats (remakes or no), but remember we're living in a very conservative time and the entertainment industry tends to reflect the politics of the day. With FCC fines recently being increased tenfold, I'm afraid the majors will be too scared to put up on a legal fight on weakening First Amendment grounds. It's easy to just rehash the old, safe material. Another Superman movie anyone? How about Dukes of Hazzard II?! :)

I have to agree with you - the same question "What can I be for Halloween" gets asked about 75 times a day. Don't people scroll down & see what else is out there? Even among the pre-packaged costumes there is great variety & plenty of room to choose something unusual & original. Folks just need to put some thought, time, effort & energy into it. Not to mention a little money! The most fun I had was when my son wanted to be Davy Crockett. We worked hard to assemble as authentic a costume as possible - right down to the 5foot rifle - & people called him Daniel Boone all night long! My daughter was a mummy in 2005; I ended up stapling her bandages on her; (not recommended!!) because we ran out of time & I couldn't stitch them on as planned. I knew better than to try the hot glue gun, at least!!!! lol
So when it comes to costumes, the variety is endless; it just seems that the questions repeat themselves........

I like to take a store bought costume and add to it and alter it to make it into exactly what I want. This year I bought a simple ninja costume and used it as the base for a medieval master thief costume for my kid.

I also spent about $100, and I think the problem with kids and teens here asking for ideas is that they don't have that kind of money to spend, not even for the thrift store.

Or maybe these days with charity and recycling so popular, no one has any old clothes, or old spare parts laying around with which to make something out of?

I'm just tired of all the females out there trying to see who can wear the least amount of costume. It's been done over, and over, and over.......and it's gotten boring and monotonous. Who cares if your a** is showing? They all look the same anyway...!!!!!!!

technology has murdered imagination (and makes people lazy, too)
