best way to think about it is like the subnet covers up part of the IP address. all ip[ information has to be looked at in binary to see the real effect
a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0
is actually 11111111.111111.0000000.0000000
so routers and switches see the subnet as being in the same area. Anything in that area can talk to another computer in that same subnet without having to go through a router.
Another axample
255.0.0.0
11111111.00000000.00000000.00000000
the first octect (255) is used for the networking section
leaving the rest available for hosts

Try using solar winds ip subnet calculator to see how things are effected with different networks
Its best to start simple with a class a, classb, and class c subnet
Another cool tool is routersim.com which lets you practice setting up routes and subnets on virtual routers.

What's so hard?

Network breaks down into network.host.

the network side of the subnet mask = all 1s.

Just decide how many hosts you want in your subnets, the rest is all network.
